Just a idea for a Tachometer :

http://www.powerballs.com/shop/product_info.php?pid=17

It's a speed meter for a gyroscope toy call " Powerball" and is able to calculate RPM up to 15 000. Is very accurate with low RPM too and just cost $16. I have a Powerball at home with a Digital Speed Meter like that and i think is working with a magnet like others tachometer.

This is absolutely brilliant, both in the American and British sense of the word. I have never thought of this and it is a great idea. BTW, this is a great website and I'm glad you put it up, I like your low cost solutions and testing methods, they are excellent.
